Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of our most frequently asked questions, or FAQs and other helpful or useful information.

What is Play Unplugged?

Play Unplugged is all about encouraging kids to put down their electronics so they can get out and play. It all begins with providing the right kind of motivation. The kind that get's kids playing and active without them even knowing it. This motivation is based on the Brag Badge. Kids earn a Brag Badge for every activity they complete. Each Brag Badge has points they can collect and then turn in for real life rewards as defined by their parents. Our goal is to help kids re-engage with the real world, help parents plan a fun and exciting summer and give much needed visibility to local businesses.

Parents

Register through our website, confirm your registration by clicking the link in an email, and begin using Play Unplugged. From there, you can quickly add a child, create rewards with point values and begin tracking which Brag Badges your child has earned. As a child collects Brags and redeems rewards, parents can see which rewards are being claimed.

Kids

A child logs into the Play Unplugged website through their own Kid Portal with their own unique username and password. Once logged in, a child can track Brag Badges they've earned, view potential rewards, and unlock new Braggies through the Brags they've earned.

Businesses

Businesses can chose which Brag Badges they would like to sponsor. They also define what the requirements are for earning the badge. The more Brags assigned to the badge, the more difficult those requirements could be. Once a child has completed the requirements, they go to the sponsoring business and pick up the badge. This leads to a HUGE increase in foot traffic and visibility for the local business.

Play Unplugged is geared toward kids aged 4 to 14 with access to the internet through a computer or mobile device. Play Unplugged is free to use. As kids engage in Play Unplugged, it helps solve the "I'm bored" epidemic that plagues almost every parent throughout the summer.

How do I register?

Registration is easy. Just sign up for a new account by filling in the form completely with your full name, a valid email address, a username and password, and your role within the family (mom, dad). Hit "REGISTER" and look for an email from us confirming your registration (this part is important, so that we know that you're in fact real and not some robot or zombie). Click the link in the email and start using Play Unplugged. That's it.

Do I need to register?

Registration is not required. However if you want to track which Brag Badges you've earned, you'll need a Play Unplugged account.

Where does my child log in?

Your child has their own unique area of our website, completely separate from the parents. They log in using the username and password you gave them by going to the Kids area at https://family.weplayunplugged.com/kids.php. Here, your child will be able to see their tracked Brag Badges along with how many Brags each badge is worth. They also be able to redeem rewards their parents have set-up.

What do you do with my child's information?

When adding your child in the Parents section of the website, we ask for a limited amount of information about your child including gender, birthday, and an email address. The email address is not required, but if one is provided, it will be used to send notifications related to birthday greetings, new Brag Badges, and rewards but never any solicitations or newsletters.

How much does it cost to participate?

While the program is free for all to participate, some activities may require a small purchase in order to complete the badge requirements. For example, if you are working on the "Smore Maker" Brag Badge and don't have the necessary items to make Smores, then you'll have to make whatever purchases necessary so you can. Being said, the vast majority of all badges can be earned at no cost. If in fact a Badge Sponsor is selling their badge, please let us know. This is not allowed.

How do we prove we did an activity?

This depends on the sponsor of the Brag Badge. Some may require a photograph. Some may require something in writing. Others may only require your word. Please see the details page for each Brag Badge in order to verify what needs to be done in order to receive the badge.

When does the program start and end?

The Play Unplugged program officially starts Memorial Day weekend and goes to Labor Day weekend. During this time you'll be able to complete the activities for any one of our Brag Badges and earn the badge.

How old are the participants?

Play Unplugged really doesn't have an age requirement. Being said, we've found our most engage participants are generally between the ages of 6 and 12. Play Unplugged is designed to help remind all of us that while technology can be part of our lives, it shouldn't be the center of our lives. Since we all could use a little less screen time, the program really does benefit any age.

What's the Play Unplugged lanyard?

Just prior to the begining of each summer program, we distribute lanyards to all the participating elementary age children in each official Play Unplugged area. The lanyard is an easy way to hold all the Brag Badges your child has earned.

How do I get a Play Unplugged lanyard

Play Unplugged lanyards are given out on a first-come-first-serve basis during the final few weeks of school from the given area the program is in. If you wish to receive a lanyard, you will find lanyard distribution points in each Play Unplugged area. In some areas, there is a nominal cost in order to receive additional lanyards. If I loose a badge, can I get another one?

This depends on the Brag Badge sponsor for the badge in question. We would encourage you to contact them and see if they'll give you another one.

What are Brag Badge points or Brags?

Each Brag Badge has a point allocation assigned to it called "Brags". Either 1, 5, 10 or 20 Brags may be assigned to the badge. The higher the Brags, the more difficult the activity. Brags can be used in any number of ways. First and foremost, they can be used to redeem rewards that have been set-up by you, the parent. In other words, once a child has earned enough Brags, they can indicate which pre-determined reward they would like to receive. Brags can also be used to unlock "Braggers", these are the Play Unplugged characters found on each Brag Badge. Finally Brags can be used by Play Unplugged Area Sponsors in order to qualify participants for additional prizes. Find more at your Area Sponsor page.
